Beautifully written story about life and death.
A very touching story about life, death, the importance of family, and hope. Beth, who is diagnosed with leukemia, is a refreshingly likable, honest young woman.

Bebe Faas Rice has written numerous other fine novels, including "The Year The Wolves Came", "The Listeners", and the "Class Trip" novels.

Authors: Laurie Lazzaro Knowlton and Joyce Haynes
Average review score:

Nana's Rice Pie
This book was used as a resource in conjunction with a unit about the surrounding community where I teach second grade. It takes place in the kitchen of a grandmother and a little girl who speak of their way of life and growing rice while they bake a rice pie. It was a wonderful book. My students loved the story and learned much about our agricultural heritage.

New Blue Shoes
Published in School & Library Binding by Atheneum (February, 1975)
Author: Eve Rice
Average review score:

New shoes are needed but only blue will do.
This is a great little book that is fun to read out loud to children. The story is simple but imaginative and the illustrations add to the story without being distracting. New readers will add this to their list of "I can read this all by myself" books. The story is about a young person who needs a new pair of shoes but feels that only blue shoes will do. Can a blue pair be found? Read it and find out.

Excellent
This a good book for a nice short and sweet reading of the Nuremberg Trials. It gives the reader a good perspective of why the Trials were held and what lessons should be learned from them. Rice gives the audience a juanting array of themes with out really going into all the politics of the event. Rice is a good read for people who want to know the juice of the Trial.

Oats!: A Book of Whimsy
Published in Paperback by Celestial Arts (May, 1900)
Authors: Shirley Streshinsky, Maria Streshinsky, and Marla Streshinsky
Average review score:

These authors know their oats!
I have found no other book that sums up my feelings for oats as well as this. If you love oats, like oats or are only moderately fond of oats, this is the book for you! The only thing that keeps this recipe from scoring a "10" is that, although it mentions haggis, it does not actually have a recipe for haggis.

An Old-Time Christmas
Published in Hardcover by Fleming H Revell Co (October, 1997)
Authors: Helen Steiner Rice, Virginia J. Ruehlmann, and Helen Steiner Rice
Average review score:

A must own, must share, one of the greatest Christmas Books.
This book covers everything; such as the history of the poinsetta, mistletoe, candy canes, etc. Also, eloquent Christmas poems and sayings, with heavy doses of Old World charm. It includes projects, Christmas Carols, prayers, etc. It truely depicts the 'true meanings of Christmas.' I am astounded that no one has written a review of this book. I have also become aware that it isn't a well known book. Surely, this book is destined to become a classic! For Children to adult.

On y Va, Level 1
Published in Paperback by Heinle & Heinle Publishers (January, 1989)
Authors: Jeannette D. Bragger and Donald Rice
Average review score:

Extremely Helpful
I first came across this book in 5th grade, when I began my study of French. I was amazed to hear that, being mere 10 year-olds, we would be studying from the same text as a normal high-school class. The book outlines everything in a very clear and efficient manner. Some might consider it to be a great deal slower-paced than most other foreign-language textbooks, but believe me, that definitely made a difference to me. It took 4 years for me to finish the first two books, but at the end of 8th grade, all the information had been so efficiently drilled into our heads, everybody in the class had a 100% passing rate to enter advanced high-school French classes. We had completed more than the basic requirements to enter French II (the highest levels most high schools allow freshmen to enter), that in the graduating class of 1999, nearly half the class entered French 3, with many in honors-level classes. I currently am enrolled in a AP French 4 course, and I can definitely say that without the early start in French I had at Brookfield, there would be no way that I'd be where I am today.

Our God-Breathed Book: The Bible
Published in Hardcover by Sword of the Lord (August, 2000)
Author: John R. Rice
Average review score:

The Greatest From the Greatest
John R. Rice was one of the most prolific writers of his time until his death in 1980. Upon his death only Isaac Asimov had more published words in print. Spanning a ministry of some 70 years, he walked the walk like none other of his generation. In my opinion this is one of four masterpiece works that he wrote. From the fundamentalist point of view, the very finest work on Biblical inspiration in print!

The Outlaw of Torn
Published in Hardcover by Indypublish.Com (September, 2002)
Author: Edgar Rice Burroughs
Average review score:

Elements of Robin Hood
I read virtually everything Burroughs wrote that I could lay my hands on when I was in my early teens. This one escaped me. Having finally discovered it, even at an advanced age, I can say it is one of the jewels of ERB's work. While I am partial to his series works, there are times when a single volume story is all you want to read. This is a prime candidate.

Written in 1914 and published serially, ERB makes a departure from his plot formula (at least a little) in order to write this tale of ultimate vengeance. The main character, Norman of Torn, aka Prince Richard of England, becomes the prime tool for the revenge of another. There are the usual elements of romance, but in effect this is a novel about knights and sword fights, outlaws versus nobility, chivalry versus lusts. Life was never this black and white, but it makes for good reading. I found the story to be reminiscent of both Ivanhoe and Robin Hood, and well worth the read. P-)

A first rate swordplay pulp novel from Edgar Rice Burroughs
Edgar Rice Burroughs is best known for his Tarzan novels and better known for his Mars, Pellucidar and other science-fiction series, but "The Outlaw of Torn" is one of his best yarns. Henry III of England insults Sir Jules de Vac, who takes his vengeance by kidnapping young Prince Richard, a figure, Burroughs points out, who has been lost to the pages of history. As Norman, the Outlaw of Torn, the young man becomes the greatest swordsman in England and a fearless outlaw with a price upon his head who raises an army loyal only to him. Of course, although he is ignorant of his noble birth, he is drawn to the lovely Bertrade de Montfort, daughter of the King's brother-in-law, the Earl of Leicester. This romance fits in nicely with the plans of de Vac, who contrives situations for the king to be responsible for killing his own son. The obvious comparison for "The Outlaw of Torn" is with Robin Hood, but Burroughs' pulp novel has its own tale to tell. This is one of his best novels and as an example of the pulp fiction of the early 20th century it is a first-class work. I read every ERB novel I could get my hands on as a kid, and "The Outlaw of Torn" is the one I re-read the most.
